EME License FAQs
- Is there a license fee for BIT's EME?
- Is there a subscription fee for BIT's EME?
- What is the difference between a license fee and a subscription fee?
- I thought "open-source" meant "free". Why do you call EME "open-source" if subscription fees are charged?
- No, there are no up-front license fees for EME, neither for Community Edition nor for Enterprise Edition.
- The EME license is free, but it is not a "free ride". The EME license is available to all end-users free-of-charge, and can be used for commercial purposes. However, it is not free to be distributed, re-branded, or re-sold. If you are interested in becoming a licensed distributor of EME, please contact BIT for more information.
- There are no ongoing subscription fees for EME Community Edition. EME Enterprise Edition is a complete solution with more robust features & services containing components that require on-going subscription fees. The subscription fees vary depending on the level of service that is purchased. Please contact BIT for more information.
- A license fee is an up-front fee that is charged at the time software is downloaded or otherwise acquired. A subscription fee is an on-going fee that is charged for maintenance and support services. Subscription fees can be charged monthly, yearly, or on a contract basis.
- "Open-source" does not mean "free". Open-source can mean free, but not all open-source software is available free-of-charge. Open-source means that the source code is released to the user community and they can make their own modifications as they choose. Closed-source means that the source code is not released, even to purchasers of the license and subscription services. Some open-source software is free; some is not free. Some free software is open-source; some is closed-source.
